Surgical Intervention / Intervención Quirúrgica
Spine Surgery in San Antonio
NSC's board-certified neurosurgeons have performed complex spine surgeries for over 20 years. Surgery here is never the first option — but when it is the right one, it is offered with confidence, precision, and full transparency.
Cuando la cirugía es la respuesta correcta, la ofrecemos con confianza, precisión y plena transparencia.
Our Surgical Philosophy
Recommended Only When It's the Best Path Forward.
The majority of NSC patients do not require surgery. Many spine and nerve conditions respond to conservative care when the diagnosis is accurate and treatment is appropriately targeted. Our surgeons take genuine pride in keeping patients out of the operating room when surgery is not the right answer.
But when surgery is the right answer — when imaging confirms it, when nerve function is at risk, when quality of life cannot be restored any other way — we do not hesitate. Our surgeons bring over 55 combined years of neurosurgical experience to every case. They are trained in advanced techniques, certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery, and Fellows of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.
Surgical outcomes at NSC are tracked and reviewed. We monitor infection rates, pain control, hospital stay duration, and functional recovery through follow-up appointments months after surgery — not just in the immediate post-operative period.
The Surgical Process
From Evaluation to Recovery
De la evaluación a la recuperación
Conservative Care First
Surgery at NSC is never the first recommendation. Every patient goes through a documented course of conservative care — physical therapy, pain management, or targeted procedures — before a surgical option is discussed. This is not a formality; it reflects our genuine commitment to doing what is right for each patient.
Diagnostic Confirmation
Surgery is recommended only when imaging, nerve studies, and clinical examination all point to the same source. When the evidence is clear and conservative care has been exhausted, our surgeons present the surgical option with honesty — explaining what the procedure addresses, what it does not, and what recovery looks like.
Surgical Clearance & Coordination
Before surgery, NSC coordinates your pre-operative clearance — cardiology, labs, EKG, and any specialist consultations your health history requires. Our team manages this process so you are not navigating it alone. Clearance is typically completed 2–4 weeks before your scheduled procedure.
The Procedure
Our surgeons use advanced techniques and premium implant systems selected based on your anatomy, bone density, and the specific demands of your surgery. Procedures range from single-level minimally invasive fusions to complex multi-level reconstructions.
Recovery & Follow-Up
Post-operative care is managed in-house. Your surgical team monitors signs of infection, pain control, and functional recovery through scheduled follow-up appointments — months after surgery, not just in the immediate post-op period. Physical therapy is integrated into your recovery plan from the start.
Surgical Procedures
Procedures Performed at NSC
Procedimientos realizados en NSC
Lumbar Fusion (TLIF / PLIF)
Fusion of one or more lumbar vertebrae to address instability, severe disc degeneration, or spondylolisthesis. Transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) is among the most common and most effective procedures we perform.
Cervical Disc Replacement & Fusion
Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) or cervical disc arthroplasty to address herniated discs, cervical stenosis, and cervical radiculopathy causing arm pain, weakness, or numbness.
Decompression (Laminectomy / Discectomy)
Removal of bone or disc material pressing on nerve roots or the spinal cord. Decompression relieves pain, restores function, and is often performed as a standalone procedure when fusion is not required.
SI Joint Fusion
Surgical stabilization of the sacroiliac joint using minimally invasive implants. Highly effective for patients with confirmed SI joint dysfunction that has not responded to conservative care.
Kyphoplasty
A minimally invasive vertebral augmentation procedure for compression fractures, most commonly from osteoporosis. Restores vertebral height and stabilizes the fracture — performed within 48 hours of diagnosis at NSC.
Complex Spine Reconstruction
Multi-level fusions, revision surgeries, and deformity corrections for patients with scoliosis, kyphosis, or prior surgical complications. Our surgeons have the specialized training and experience that complex cases require.
