Our Physicians

Staffed by three experienced neurosurgeons, Neurosurgery and Spine Consultants (NSC) was founded by a father-son team in 2009— Gerardo Zavala Sr., M.D., neurosurgeon, and Gerardo Zavala II, M.D., neurosurgeon.

GERARDO ZAVALA II, MD
Neurosurgeon

Dr Zavala is a bilingual San Antonio native. Fellowship trained at Loyola Medical University Center in Maywood, Illinois, he brings extensive training in minimally invasive spinal surgery, scoliosis correction, degenerative spinal stenosis, and herniated disc disease. He is proud to serve the communities that he grew up in by offering a conservative surgical approach matched with unsurpassed patient care. Dr Zavala and his team are passionate about delivering scientific and methodical surgical techniques to individualize patient outcomes. Patients can expect compassionate care delivered with respect and accountability.

"My philosophy with surgical intervention is to "proceed with caution". Surgery is an invasive endeavor, which should be addressed with mutual respect and partnership between surgeon and patient. Therefore, when considering surgical treatment, conservative measures should have been exhausted prior to serious surgical consideration."  - Gerardo Zavala II

LADISLAU ALBERT, JR, MD
Neurosurgeon

Dr Albert joins NSC after completing his neurosurgical residency and spine fellowship with New York Medical College/Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, New York. He received specialized training in spinal surgery, with focuses in degenerative spinal stenosis and herniated disc repair. In addition, he is well versed with a wide range of both cranial and spinal neurosurgical conditions.

"Each neurosurgical patient is a unique individual. The right treatment must be specifically tailored to a combination of that person’s anatomical findings, emotional state, and family support system. A neurosurgeon must always remember to treat the person and not just the radiologic and clinical exam findings." - Ladislau Albert Jr.

GERARDO ZAVALA, SR, MD
Neurosurgeon

Dr Zavala, Sr has been in private practice in San Antonio for the last 35 years.

"Over the past 30 years, neurosurgery has changed dramatically, with most of the advances occurring in the last 10 years. Now, we have the advantage of utilizing state-of-the-art techniques that allow surgeries to be performed in a minimally invasive fashion. MRIs, angiograms and other forms of guided imagery can also be used in the operating room during surgery to provide enhanced monitoring for patients undergoing brain or spinal cord procedures. There is no doubt in my mind that neurosurgery has changed for the better over the last 30 years."  - Gerardo Zavala SR.
